"In Britain petrol is £1.10 per litre = £5.50 per gallon = nearly $11 per gallon. A large portion of this is tax. I suppose those of us who take climate change seriously shouldn't complain . . ." more

Hi Mike. I grew up near Manchester and went to Loreto Convent. We had a caravan at Peel and spent our weekends and summers there, so Blackpool and St Annes were almost a second home.

Mike, now that I can actually post my pings again, thank you so much for reading my poems. Yes to Istanbul! I will always want to be where I am not. I just started reading "Human Smoke" by Nicholson Baker and Colin Thubron's "Shadow of the Silk Road," a wonderful story of a great trek through Central Asia and Afghanistan. And what's on your reading list these days?

Mike, I KNEW you were an artist! Talk about perceptive. Welcome, and it's so good to have you in the group. I have only been writing poetry for less than two years now, but our Gather friends are wondrous guides and critique well. Especially helpful have been John Beck, Ed Nudelman, John Walter, Amy George, Jan H., Dean, Barbary, and others. Doug is also an artist with an interest in poetry, and he has lots of intriguing things to say about the nexus of the two. And the most important thing when you're writing is to read -- I love "Dover Beach"; it's one of my favorite poems -- everything you can. I especially like the poetry of Galway Kinnell, who had the foresight to record the poems on a CD, which he includes with his latest book, "Strong is Your Hold." Just hearing him read his poem "The Stone Table" brings tears to my eyes. That was the thing that made me start reading my poems out loud when I finished them, to make sure the tone, rhythm, etc. was natural. I also studied music and music history, so I'm always conscious of sound, and all the elements that make music breathe. So listen to music, too; it's a most useful exercise in writing poetry. Cheers! -- ag

If you're new to writing poetry, Mike, by all means keep going. Yes, "Dover Beach"'s atmosphere, or rather something similar from a different time, hangs around your Trawling. Your work gives me great pleasure.

What is that one thing that you really like about yourself? Do you enjoy talking to your reflction in the mirror? Are you aware of the significance of your very existence? Do you think you have found the reason of your being?
Please do let me know the abovementioned, if only you have the time for the same!
Thanks and have a ball!

Dear Mike -
Please tell me more about why you favor the Daily Star and the Sun over the Financial Times ?
I would be honored if you would look at my paintings and poetry on my Gather page - - - there is a poem there that I wrote abpout Fairbanks (I lived there for five years).
Here's an amusing riddle for you :
Question: What happened to the Dyslexic Satanist ?????
Answer: He sold his soul to Santa.
All the best -
Madame 'X'
looking forward to hearing from you
